Three police officers perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

The three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped after the explosion was apprehended not long after. All three have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was under an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a floor above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
