EU Parliament Vote to Ban Meat-Related Terms for Vegetarian Foods

During a significant vote this week, European Parliament members voted by a margin of 355-247 to restrict food names including "steak" and "sausage" solely for animal-derived foods.

What the Decision Signifies

Should this proposal becomes law, common plant-based products such as veggie burgers, tofu steak, and cauliflower schnitzel could need to be renamed across European Union markets.

However, for the ban to be enforced, it must receive support from a majority of the 27 EU member states, something that remains uncertain.

The Arguments Surrounding the Measure

Proponents argue that customers require clear labeling and while meat terms should only describe items from animals.

"A steak and sausages represent products from animal farming: not from synthetic production or vegetable sources," said French MEP Céline Imart.

Opponents, led by environmental lawmakers, called the move populist maneuvering.

"Veggie burgers, wheat schnitzel and soy sausage do not confuse shoppers, just rightwing politicians," said Austrian lawmaker Thomas Waitz.

Past Efforts and Judicial Background

The isn't the first attempt to control these terminology. The European parliament rejected a comparable prohibition in four years ago.

France earlier enacted a domestic ban on traditional names for vegetarian products in recent years, but the European court of justice ruled it illegal under EU law in this year.

Business and Public Response

Leading Germany's retailers including Aldi and Lidl oppose the proposal, warning that changing familiar terms would mislead shoppers.

Consumer groups point to research showing that the majority of consumers comprehend these names when products are properly identified as vegan.

"Nearly seventy percent of consumers recognize these names provided items are clearly marked plant-based," said Irina Popescu, a food policy expert at BEUC.

What Following the Vote

This legislative measure next faces consideration by EU member states, and it must secure majority support to be enacted.

Considering the divided views within various lawmakers and the public, the outcome of this initiative is still uncertain.
