Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Exits After Pivot Towards Chicken.

The boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the UK might have hit pizza saturation while expanding the franchise into chicken products has been ousted after conflicts with its governing body.

Executive Change

Andrew Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who was with Domino's for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect the UK's leading pizza food delivery firm towards poultry-based products, stating in a recent interview there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed chicken was the quickest rising food category in the world.

Board Disagreements

It is understood that there was friction between the CEO and the board over his approach and management style, although Domino's official statement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Introduction

In the autumn, the chain introduced its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief referred to as a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.

While the business is still intending to launch it across its extensive network in 2026 as planned, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its core pizza business.

Board Statement

Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on identifying the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said sales declined by one and a half percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it warned that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it blamed reduced spending in the period before the budget and higher payroll outlays for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in interim earnings.

Rival chains are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the shutting of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the business behind its UK venues entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards balanced diets, the company has launched lower-calorie items, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a small has 909 calories.

Interim Leadership

The interim chief has been with Domino's since the recent past, and was formerly with the betting firm a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the CEO position permanently.

She said: “We have a several current development and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on implementing at pace.”

She added these included further work on the company's procurement system and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also lacking a full-time chief financial officer until the spring, when Andy Andrea joins from the beverage producer a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow acts as temporary CFO.
