A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates outlets across the country and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a regular bidder at the traditional January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent acquisition tops his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to surpass his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments soon after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," remarked one happy patron.
